 Hi! I got really busy with this school semester and work and family stuff so I apologize for not getting back to quite a bit of things yet ;-;

Just rly intrigued by the new Murderbot trailer and wanted to chat about it! I forgot/didn't know this was happening lol.

It has been a while since I read... part of the series (oops) so I don't have a ton of thoughts. Just that:

1) This isn't what I pictured Murderbot to look like, but I think it works quite well! Especially because Murderbot doesn't have a gender. I don't think we typically view people who "look" like cis men as non-binary/androgynous/etc. So, as always, it has the caveat of being representation under a layer of speculative fiction and perhaps part of it was wanting someone more masculine in such a violent role, BUT I'm impressed they went there and I like the portrayal!

I do think I would've found it hotter if Muderbot's body were more stereotypically "female" just because of my personal tastes of finding that sort of appearance covered in blood attractive. I also got part of my visual of Murderbot from this animatic which is a little different than the actor. I kind of like that I get to keep my interpretation of the book separate from the adaptation through this barrier, though. Along those same lines I pictured the planet and facility as WAY visually darker than it is here which helps that separation but is also funny to me because we live in an age of fatally under-lighted TV typically.

2) THAT SAID WE DID GET SO MANY MORE HOT PEOPLE!!!!! MENSAH MY BELOVED!!!!!!!!! Man I hope if we get more adaptations her PTSD gets explored somewhere in there.

3) If this goes well, I do hope more of the books get adapted! I have trouble reading lengthy fiction books, so I got into Murderbot because it started off as a novella... but the page counts kept creeping higher and higher the more books I went into it with. And I knew that would happen going in, but I got overwhelmed around halfway into the series so I have no idea what happens after a certain point. Adaptations have their issues and I shouldn't expect it given how big budget sci-fi can be, but it would be a nice way to catch up with the story in... 14 theoretical years...

4) I'm just really in awe that Apple is putting out so many sci-fi bangers, presumably. I enjoyed what I saw of Raised By Wolves (I gotta finish that oops), I'm obsessed with Severance, and I've heard SO many good things about Silo, Foundation, and For All Mankind. It's really exciting that they've been able to explore so many original concepts so expertly, that I'm not rolling my eyes at Another adaptation/reboot because I actually really trust whatever quality control is going on over there. (In terms of the entertainment. I will never buy another Apple product, lol.)

5) Lastly, just the VIBES are so fun but I can tell it's going to make me cry in a great balance. Sanctuary Moon! Cool monsters! Whatever the fuck Murderbot has going on with the rest of the crew! I'm not making it out of this alive!

ANYWAY I would love to hear people's thoughts on it!!! Maybe I should reread and attempt to get further into the books before this drops.

PS. This reminds me, with my Anemone icon, that I Was a Teenage Exocolonist referenced Murderbot, lol. They had some character watching The Rise And Fall of Sanctuary Moon, which completely took me the fuck out.

My thoughts, as someone who has read 6 of the books, are as follows:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS OH FUCK OH FUCK HOW DID I MISS THIS!!!!!!! SANCTUARY MOON!!!! MENSAH!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I would have picked someone a little bit more non descript or androgynous, but you know what, I'll TAKE IT. Skarsgard is not a mega hunk and he's a good actor.

Oh my God I'm so excited.

I don't know how well it'll actually work as an adaptation—I saw some saying that comedic timing is going to be everything, and that's hard to actually gauge from a trailer that's presumably cut to show some of the punchier bits—but I'm cautiously optimistic and if nothing else I'm going to watch it because Mensah and Gurathin are both. hm. well. to my taste.

OKAY I've been re-reading the novellas, and I think if they're going to get ten Apple TV-length episodes they're either doing more than one of the novellas, or they're vastly expanding all the human stuff that Murderbot wasn't paying attention to because it didn't care, or both. It'll be interesting to see how they decide to mush things together if they do decide to do more than one of the novellas, though, because the ART stuff is very fun as a book and probably won't make for very compelling TV... but I do want Murderbot demanding that it absolutely does not want ART to give it sex-related parts on screen.

(I also suspect that Murderbot/Gurathin is going to explode as a ship. It's already in the top 4; they made Gurathin Like That, it's going to explode.)

I've been thinking about this more and I'm coming here to say it because there's no way I can say this on Tumblr but while I wish they'd been more interesting with the Murderbot casting I am also very very grateful that having a white man play the character means I won't see the million and one essays that would be out there about the unfortunate implications of Murderbot being played by someone non-white.
